Breast Implants FAQ In Relation To ALCL (Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma)

What is breast implant associated-anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL)?

A rare type of lymphoma that develops adjacent to breast implants. It usually develops as a swelling of the breast 3 to 14 years after the insertion of breast implants. The current risk is estimated to be 1 in 30,000.

BIA-ALCL is not same as breast cancer. The majority of cases are cured with the removal of implants and the fibrous capsule around them. The majority of patients require no additional treatment.

All known cases where there were no delays in diagnosis have resulted in 100% cure at this time.

1) Implants Surface (Smooth VS Textured)

Patients can choose between smooth and textured surface of breast implants. From current available implants, round shape can be either smooth or textured surface. While teardrop shape has only textured surface. According to current data, there has no documented case in a patient with a smooth implant. If a patient is using a smooth implant, the risk of BIA-ALCL is currently zero. However, many surgeons use textured implants because there is an evidence to suggest that in situations they may reduce the chances of capsular contracture (scar tissue build-up) or help to keep an implant in position. Some textured implants have among the best data for rupture and longevity.

2) Brand (Mentor VS Allergan)

The leading brand of implant in Thailand are MENTOR®   and  ALLERGAN® Both brand  show that they have higher quality product with low chance of getting ALCL. There is no definite evidence yet.

Allergan has two model implants:  The CUI and Natrelle.  CUI is medium model, while Natrelle is more expensive and has higher technology. Dr Boonchai will only use the better Natrelle model for his patients.

During the consultation, patient can choose either MENTOR® or ALLERGAN NATRELLE® implant. Although Natrelle implants are more expensive than Mentor implant. The surgical package price will be the same.

Note:

If you have swelling of the breast associated with a breast implants, please contact us right away. Most breast swelling that occurs after breast implants is not due to BIA-ALCL, however it does needs to be excluded.

Dr Boonchai would like to encourage every patient to carefully read the data provided by ASAPS (The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Inc.) regarding the ALCL before proceeding with any breast implants surgery.
